Alfredo started selling Truffles, Cheeses, Seafood, and Cured Meats after he moved from Rome to New York City in the 1990s. He would drive across New York and sell to restaurants and gourmet stores directly from his van. The cheeses came from Italian farmhouse producers and his products were often seasonal. Alfredo explains, "I wanted to attract head chefs who designed their menus around the best gourmet food available." This approach won him a loyal clientele and built a reputation for excellence, as had his decision to use small producers who work in an ecological if not organic way.
With the wholesale business established, regularly supplying all the top restaurants and gourmet stores across the country, the company expanded into the fine food market. In the 2000s, Alma Gourmet premiered an online shopping experience for individual customers so that clients could now shop directly for the same products typically exclusive to top chefs.
Today at Alma Gourmet, Alfredo along with a passionate team actively run the business from the NYC warehouse. With the same purchasing philosophy at heart, Alfredo continues to travel to mainland Italy in search of more high quality and artisanal produce. Alma Gourmet offers an extensive product range, which maintains a balance between the classics (Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutti di Parma, Gorgonzola Dolce, 100% buffalo milk Mozzarella di Bufala and Burrata to name a few) and more niche delicacies.
Alma Gourmet supplies exceptional fresh white and black Truffles and other woodland mushrooms including Porcini, Morels and Chantarrels. Other specialties include superior Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Pasta di Gragnano, Pecorino Toscano DOP, Riso Vialone Nano IGP, Parmacotto Salumi, Piacenti Tuscan Salumi, Galloni Prosciutti, bottarga and caviar.
Alma Gourmet aims to import the most authentic food products that are officially protected under European Union regulations for DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta) and IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta).
